What are live-in jobs?
Categories: Job Hunting
There are a variety of live-in jobs available in Alberta. Live-in style jobs are especially popular with young people working in ski resorts; and with caregivers and au-pairs working with families in Alberta.
Room and Board
Generally, live-in jobs involve working for an employer who also provides you with room and board for the length of your contract.
In the case of the hospitality industry, a portion of your earnings may be taken out to pay for your room and board, as well as any other perks of employment - such as ski passes for ski resort workers.
Accommodation of this type is usually shared, dormitory style accommodation.
Always be sure that you are not overpaying for your room and board for a live-in job. Some employers may take advantage of the fact that you are living in company accommodation.
Live-in jobs at resorts in Alberta are popular with young people on Working Holiday Visas.
Live-in Caregiver
Canada offers a special live-in caregiver program for carers, nurses and nannies who want to work and live in the home of a Canadian family.
Live-in caregivers must live in the home of the family they are working for, and must have a contract outlining salary, benefits and any other conditions of work. Live-in caregivers hold specialised live-in caregiver work permits which allow them to work for a single family in Canada.
