What is a study permit?

Categories: Education, Student Visa

A study permit is a Canadian student visa that allows you to study in Canada for over 6 months.

If you are planning on attending a short-term course of study that takes less than 6 months tom complete, you do not need a Study Permit.

If you are planning on starting a second course after your short course, or if you are planning on extending your study, you should apply for your study permit before entering Canada. This means you will have limited work rights in Canada, and you will be able to avoid having to apply for a your study permit in a visa office outside Canada, while you are already in the country.

Alberta is responsible for its own educational system, and each school at the post-secondary level sets its own requirements and fees. You should contact your school directly for more information.

Can I work in Alberta if I hold a study permit?

Yes. If you have been in Canada legally for at least 6 months, a study permit will allow you to work a limited number of hours.

  • 20 hours per week off campus during the school year.
  • Full-time off-campus during school holidays.

Most study permit holders are eligible to a Post Graduation Work Permit upon completion of their course of study. A Post Graduation Work Permit allows you to work full time in Canada for up to two years, in order to gain Canadian work experience.

What do I need to apply for a study permit?

To apply for a study permit, you will need:

  • Proof that you have been accepted to a school in Canada. This is in the form of a Letter of Acceptance.
  • Proof that you have enough money to pay your tuition, as well as room and board near your school.
  • Provide reasonable evidence that you intend to return to your home country at the end of your studies.
  • Some applicants may also be asked to pass a medical exam, and may also need to apply for a temporary resident permit that allows them to live in Canada for a short period.

When should I apply?

It is best to apply for your study permit as soon as you have a letter of acceptance from a school in Alberta.

The current processing time for student permits can range between 2 and 28 working days, depending on which Canadian visa office you submit your application to.
