Police forces in Alberta are actively recruiting overseas, and in the rest of Canada, for people who want to work in Alberta. A large portion of the focus is in the United Kingdom, attracting British policemen to work in Alberta’s cities.In addition to working as a police officer, Alberta’s police forces also hire civilian support personnel to work with the police.
Alberta’s major cities have their own municipal police forces, while the rest of the province is policed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: RCMP.
Qualifications
Police forces in Alberta do no have specific educational qualifications. However, almost all successful applicants to work with the police in Alberta have some kind of post-secondary level education. This can be a college diploma, university degree, or other kind of post-secondary training.
Specific Requirements
To work for a police force in Alberta, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident
- Be in excellent health with no serious medical conditions
- Have no un-pardoned criminal convictions
- Have no pending criminal charges
- Have a full Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence
- Have no criminal activity in the last 3 years
- Have a good credit rating
- Must not be bankrupt and at least one year free of bankruptcy discharge
- Have good eyesight
General Requirements
Although there are no specific requirements, police forces in Alberta look for several general skills and abilities in applicants:
- Good judgement
- Ability to stay calm
- Ability to work under stress
- Fluency in English
- Physical fitness
- Willingness to help others
Generally, applicants with a history of volunteer work within their community, or experience working in a position with significant public responsibility and trust have an advantage.
Application Process
Applicants to police forces in Alberta must undergo a strict application and selection process which includes written testing, physical testing, interviews, psychological exams, security background checks, committee interviews and a through medical exam.
The written testing includes communications ability, such as vocabulary, English grammar and spelling, as well as an Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test to test judgement, critical thinking and situational awareness skills.
