What is the minimum wage in Alberta?

The minimum wage in Alberta is $8.00 per hour for all workers. This is the minimum amount that an employer can legally pay you.


With a 40-hour work week, this is equal to $320 per week before taxes.

Different Minimum Wages

There are a few jobs in Alberta that have different minimum wages. This may be because calculated hourly wages is impractical, or because of the nature of your job.

  • If you are a salesperson who is exempted from recording your working hours, you must be paid at least $320 per week.
  • If you are a domestic worker and you live with your employer, you must be paid at least $1525 per month, regardless of how many hours you work for your employer.

Are there any exceptions to the minimum wage?

Yes, there are some exceptions to the $8.00 minimum wage in Alberta.

The following jobs are exempt from the minimum wage:

  • Real Estate Brokers.
  • Securities salespersons.
  • Insurance salespersons (if paid only on commission).
  • Students working on an Alberta government approved work experience program.
  • Students working in an off campus education program.
  • Film or video extras.
  • Farm employees.
  • Camp counselors and instructors at religious camps, camps for handicapped persons, and non-profit camps.

Can an employer deduct from the minimum wage?

If your employer provides you with room and board (this is common among seasonal workers at resorts in Alberta,) they are able to deduct pay from the minimum wage.

An employer can deduct:

  • $2.63 for each meal supplied to you.
  • $3.48 for each day of lodging supplied to you.

If you give written permission to your employer, they can also deduct the cost of supplying or cleaning a uniform.
