How can I find a lawyer in Alberta?
Categories: Lawyers
All lawyers in Alberta need to be members of the Law Society of Alberta. The Law Society makes it easy to find a lawyer in Alberta.
If you need legal help, there are three easy ways to find a lawyer in Alberta.
The Yellow Pages
The yellow pages in your local telephone book will contain listings for the lawyers in your community. This is a common way for people to find a lawyer.
Family and Friends
Your family, friends, and your professional network can be a great way to find a lawyer. You can ask your contacts if they have ever used a lawyer, and if they can recommend anyone. This is often helpful if your contacts have used a lawyer for a similar reason - for example, your relatives may have hired an immigration lawyer.
The Law Society of Alberta Lawyer Referral Service
All lawyers who practice law in Alberta must be members in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. The Law Society operates a helpful Lawyer Referral Service.
The Lawyer Referral Service helps people find a lawyer in Alberta who provides the legal services that they need.
If you are in Alberta, Lower Mainland British Columbia, Nunavut, the Yukon or the North West Territories, you can call the Lawyer Referral Service toll-free on: 1-800-661-1095.
If you are in Calgary, you can call them on a local number: 403-228-1722.
What happens when I call?
- When you call, a referral operator will answer the phone. You can then advise the referral operator of your problem, or what area of law you are looking for help in.
- The referral operator will give you the name and telephone number of three Alberta lawyers who practice in the area of law you need.
- You can then make an appointment with any (or all) of the three lawyers. Inform the lawyers that you were referred by the Lawyer Referral Service.
- Each of the lawyers should give you a free 30 minute consultation. After your consultation, you can decide which lawyer you would like to hire. The lawyer can also decide if they are interested in taking your case.
