What should I know about the AHCIP card?

Categories: AHCIP

All people covered by AHCIP should have an AHCIP card. If you need to replace your card, or have other questions about your AHCIP card, you can learn more here.

What is an AHCIP card?

Your AHCIP Card provides proof that you are covered by AHCIP. It will display your AHCIP number as well as other personal details.

You can show your AHCIP card when you need medical services in Alberta and the rest of Canada. The fees for your medical treatment will be automatically billed to AHCIP if you show your card. Some examples of places where you should show your AHCIP card include:

  • At a doctor’s office
  • At the hospital
  • For medical laboratory testing
  • At the Chiropractor
  • To a physiotherapist
  • To the pharmacy

Sometimes, you may be asked to show photo identification, such as a driver’s license or a passport, to prove your identity.

Your AHCIP card is not an identity card, and you should never show it or your AHCIP number to anyone other than a medical professional. If you share your AHCIP number, you could be at risk of fraud or identity theft.

How to replace an AHCIP card

If your AHCIP card has been lost or stolen, you should contact Alberta Health and Wellness immediately to order a replacement.
You will be asked to provide your full legal name, mailing address and telephone number. You will also be asked for your AHCIP number. However, if you do not know your AHCIP number, you will be asked for your date of birth and you may be asked to provide other proof of your identity.

Always write down your AHCIP number and keep it in a safe, secure place.

How to report fraud to AHCIP

If you think somebody is using an AHCIP number fraudulently, or if you think your number may have been misused, you should contact AHCIP immediately to report the fraud.

The ACHIP fraud tip line can be called toll-free: 1-866-278-5104.

Your call will not be recorded and you can ask to remain anonymous.

AHCIP takes fraud very seriously. Fraud costs the province money which could be better spent providing health care to Albertans.
